 Abstract:

A casual conversation/roundtable with six Higher Degree Research students whose research interests explore the intersections and divergences in experiences or representations of disabled people.

This session offers an opportunity for HDR students and academic staff to engage in a dialogue, learn from one another, exchange ideas, and explore critical and creative scholarship in Disability Studies.
Each student will provide a brief introduction to their research and discuss how they approach and research disability. We will then ‘think together’ about how we engage with concepts related to disability and how we apply Critical Disability theory, including disability models and Queer-Crip theory, to our respective research areas.

Topics included in our scope include:
  • Different framings and conceptualisations of disability, including lived experiences of people with disability
  • Representations of disability in film, art and the media
  • Intersections between disability, sexuality and gender
  • The interplay between disability and other sectors, including the Justice system and Medical System
  • Participatory Action Research and working with community partners for research
