Digital Disability Projects

Overview

This research stream sits within Curtin University's Centre for Culture and Technology (CCAT) and addresses questions of digital access, inclusion, and participation as they relate to disability.

Across these projects, I am interested in how digital technologies and institutions shape the lives of people with disability, and in what critical disability perspectives bring to questions of access, equity, and knowledge production in digital contexts.

Democratic Access at Scale

An Australia-India research partnership examining audio description policy, regulation, and practice across both countries.
This project investigates the regulatory and industry conditions that shape accessible media production, with the aim of developing policy frameworks and practical resources to support equitable access at scale.
Project lead: Professor Katie Ellis
Research Assistant: Dr Kelly Moes.

Can I Get There, Can I Play, Can I Stay:
Digital Participation and Disability

This collaborative paper examines digital participation and access for people with disability, exploring the conditions under which people with disability can engage fully in digital spaces and communities.
Project lead: Professor Katie Ellis
Lead and coordinating author: Dr Kelly Moes. Collaborators: K. Locke, K. Cousins, C. Wright-Dole, D. Garg (CCAT Digital Disability Group).

Digital Citizenship and Disability Rights

Drawing on evidence submitted to the Australian Disability Royal Commission, this project explores what people with intellectual disability reported about their experiences of digital access and inclusion.
Our paper (Digital Control as Institutional Abuse) argues that digital control (the restriction of technology access) constitutes a form of institutional abuse, with significant implications for disability rights and policy.
