Neurological Disability Health Humanities Projects

Overview

This research sits within Edith Cowan University's Centre for Precision Health and addresses the lived experience of neurological disability and chronic illness across a range of conditions.

Alongside the NeuroHub WA and Brain Bites projects, I contribute as a qualitative researcher and mentor to HDR students across several projects examining conditions including Functional Neurological Disorder, Huntington's disease, and the sleep health of fly-in, fly-out workers.

This work reflects a shared commitment to community-engaged, experience-centred research in neurological and chronic illness contexts.

Collaborative Projects

From Listening to Dancing with People with Functional Neurological Disorder
A lived experience research project exploring the perspectives of people with Functional Neurological Disorder, with a focus on daily life, healthcare navigation, and what meaningful support looks like for this often-misunderstood condition.

Building on evidence for somatic and physical interventions in FND, the study first explores lived experiences through interviews, then co-designs a tailored dance-based rehabilitation programme with participants and clinicians.
Primary Investigators:
  • Dr Travis Cruickshank, Senior Research Fellow, School of Medical and Health Sciences and Lifestyle and NeuroHealth research group, Centre for Precision Health, ECU
  • Sneha Rajagopalan, Senior Physiotherapist and Masters by Research candidate, ECU.

Hidden World of HD: Using Photovoice to Capture Hidden Aspects of Huntington's Disease
A photovoice project that invites people living with Huntington's disease to document and share aspects of their experience that are rarely visible in clinical or research settings. The project centres participant knowledge as both method and evidence.
Primary Investigators:
  • Dr Travis Cruickshank, Senior Research Fellow, School of Medical and Health Sciences and Lifestyle and NeuroHealth research group, Centre for Precision Health, ECU
  • Cassandra Caratti, PhD candidate, ECU.

Sleep Environment in FIFO Mining Workers: A Lived Experience Perspective
A qualitative study examining the sleep environment in fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) mining camps from the perspectives of the workers who live and sleep in them, supporting health and wellbeing in remote work settings.
Primary Investigators:
  • Phillip Beranek, PhD Candidate, School of Medical and Health Sciences and Centre for Precision Health, ECU
  • Dr Travis Cruickshank, Senior Research Fellow, School of Medical and Health Sciences and Lifestyle and NeuroHealth research group, Centre for Precision Health, ECU.
